ryc: We did not waterproof the fabric after washing it. Our manual said that we could use a really gentle detergent (like Woolite or Dreft). We chose Woolite. And it said that the most important thing to maintaining waterproof is making sure that all the soap residue gets rinsed off, so I double rinsed it with the hose. And it seems to be okay. We shall see on our next trip.

Think of all the free time that your DH will have if the boys take turns mowing the grass. There is something to be said for having large families. Many hands make light work.
